Shashi Tharoor meets Congress President after his “cattle class” remark

Union Minister Shashi Tharoor today met Congress President Sonia Gandhi after his return from Liberia and Ghana. Shashi Tharoor is grappled in a controversy over his ‘cattle class’ remark these days. There have been demands of Tharoor’s resignation from the cabinet from his party leaders itself. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had even demanded his resignation as Minister of State for External Affairs.

Tharoor was on an official visit to Liberia and Ghana when the controversy broke out. After his 20-minut meeting with Congress Presiedent Tharoor did not answer any question of the media. Last week his comments on the Twitter termed the travel in the economy class as “ cattle class.” His remark has provoked strong reactions from across the political class. Even members of AICC reacted on his remark.

Congress spokes person Jayanthi Natrajan said that the party disapproved of the disparaging reference to economy class travelers. Another party spokes person Manish Tiwari supported the demand of Rajasthan Chief Minsiter for the resignation of Shashi Tharoor. Tiwari said, “Congress will take appropriate action at the appropriate time.”

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had downplayed the controversy saying Tharoor's comment was a joke.
